This morning, as it is shady in the walled garden early in the day, I thought I would try and get a patch ready for putting the sunflowers that I have grown from seed outside. They are a bit tall and spindly so don't really want them being forced on anymore by the heat. There is black weed control matting all round the walled garden and I imagine it has been there for a long time. No surprise them that I had trouble moving any of it and it was full of roots in the matting and in the ground. A lot of little sycamore trees to get rid of as well. So I literally moved what I needed to and as the soil wasn't good underneath used about a sack of compost!
I plodded on and got them in and used the canes to help support them while they get stronger.
That wall does get a lot of sun during the day so hopefully they will flourish there, only time will tell. Tina came home from morning prayers and we had a drink out in the garden which was lovely.
I wrote some letters and went down to post them and called in the shop on the way home to get something for tea.
The craft group were meeting this afternoon and I hadn't really got anything on the go I wanted to take along. I sorted out some material and covered seven templates ready to sew them together. Then I set off to walk there today, could have had a lift but it is about a mile and I can manage that now. It was pretty hot though. The green area was near the shops, very attractive just on the edge of an estate.
Then there were these fabulous trees as I got near to Doreen's house, she was hosting this months session.
I had misjudged how long a flower would take me to complete and it was done very quickly. Doreen found some material and card, I hadn't taken any spare precut templates so had to draw round a used one and cut them out with scissors. Then I only had dark pink cotton with me but the stitches are small enough that they don't show.
I walked home so a reasonable amount of steps today! I watered the front garden, well attempted to with the new hose we bought for the purpose yesterday. But the flow was really slow and it wasn't long enough to reach one bed, but better that watering cans anyway.
Quite a funky looking hose!
I have a little holly tree, just two twigs of it really, but it appears to be going to flower, that's quite exciting.
Mostly blue skies and light clouds today, the sky was clouding over a bit as I watered the back garden though.
Not planning on doing a lot more today, will watch Holby in a bit.
I thought “that looks a nice bit of soil”, then I read you’d put a bag of compost on it!I do love sunflowers. I always remember when I was a lad seeing them every year in a garden down a cut I used to go down. They’d tower above the gardens 6 foot fence. When you’re little, they look even bigger! Should be a perfect spot for them in your garden.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a slightly easier, but pleasant day for you. No chance to get bored, that’s a fact :-) Were the patchwork flowers just something to do, or are you planning a bigger project with them?
A very funky hosepipe. But it wouldn’t seem right if you had a normal green or black one like most people!
I did grow pretty big sunflowers a couple of times in Peterborough so I am hoping these will take off.
ReplyDeleteThe flowers were just something to do at the last minute, may do a couple more and make a cushion cover or bag, can go with all the other things on the back boiler.
