This morning I was up in time to put jam and cream in the scones and took them round to the parish hall along with more scones and a sponge in good time for kick off. Lots of people there getting ready and lots of cake! Tina, Darren and I all went along to the coffee morning a bit later, all managed to win something on the tombola and Tina won a prize on the raffle as well. I won a 500 piece jigsaw of swans, will take a picture of it when I get around to doing it.
When I came home I got the trolley ready to go down and get a bag of the logs so that I could change the fireplace in my sitting room. Also got some food shopping while I was out. It was drizzly and very cold out this morning, so any thoughts of gardening soon disappeared. A picture of the fireplace as it is and of the bag of logs, which Darren kindly carried upstairs for me.
I opened the sack up and was so disappointed as the logs were damp and mouldy. spread them out to see if they would dry off a bit.
It seemed to have brightened up (from inside) so got ready to walk to the mere, the wind was bitterly cold but decided I needed the exercise anyway. Walking past the shop a couple of doors down the road they had bags of logs, so thought I would ask about them on the way back. Decidedly chilly at the mere.
It was muddy underfoot, I walked as far as I could, there is no access all round it from that entrance, but I took photos from there to try and give an impression of just how vast it is.
I had a drink in the cafe and asked how you got to walk round it. The lass said that you had to go up the Hull road past Tesco's and there is a public footpath that takes you through the fields round it. She said it takes about three hours so that is a maybe sometime, maybe never then!!
I stopped at the shop on the way back and asked it the logs were dry, he said they were as they have an indoor store. So, another, slightly smaller bag came home with me!
They are dry, but large pieces so that you can see the cut edges. Not really what I want. I will look out for some smaller, complete lots, but I have arranged these ones as best I can for now.
I am knitting a hat and when I picked it up this morning I could see that I had gone wrong with the pattern. I hate taking knitting back and in years gone it would have been a bin job. But I really like this pattern and the wool so did take it back, worked out what row I should be on and have it right again for now.
We have had dinner, I have Casualty to watch later and I have started the second series of The Two Ronnies.
Quite a busy day again for you. That’s the thing with events like that, everyone takes cake. But as long as they get rid of it all and make a few quid into the bargain, all are happy. Specially the people eating it. Shame the logs were damp. Seems strange to keep air dried logs out in the wet. Doh! With all trees around I’m surprised you’ve not been out with a saw in your trolley. The fireplace does look better though even with those large chunks in it.
ReplyDeleteThat mere is huge! Looks more like a large lake, although I don’t know the criteria for which is which. Anyway, it’s big. A three hour walk around it sounds like a pleasant thing to do, maybe in the warmer weather though with sandwiches and a flask.
I think when I get smaller logs it will be good, glad I decided to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteThey have boating on the mere in the summer, certainly pleant of room for it! I have a way to go before I can consider a long walk, but you never know.
I think they had cake over, but will freeze some I think. Tina said they made about £400.
