The Italian Chapel, Orkney

The Italian Chapel, or ‘The miracle of camp 60’, is a must if you go to the Orkney Islands. Isolated and striking with such an amazing history.

As you can see the outside is impressive considering it was built by prisoners of war with no real raw materials or tools.

Now some pictures from inside which was just stunning.

Before the chapel was built artist Domenico Chiocchetti build a statue of St George and the dragon out of barbed wire and cement! Hard to believe.

It really was quite a magical place.

  1. What an amazing place, and some equally amazing pics you captured. Fantastic building considering it was built using so little. The inside is stunning and I envy you being there to take the pics. I’m sure it was even better seeing it in person.
The statue is a great bit of work too. It seems everything there is made with very few materials, but is a bit out of the way. Definitely a place I’d like to visit.

  2. Apparently they had a pool table they made of concrete! Pretty ingenious folk.
