This morning I had a cup of tea with Tina before I went out. Blue was looking interested in the cupboards so Tina took the bottom off one for her to go and explore. She then promptly disappeared! Tina took some more boards off and we called, Tina got down on the floor and looked and the gas men had left a huge hole in the wall. Blue, bless her, had entered the cavity in the walls. It took toys and treats to coax her out, we won't be taking the bases of the cupboards off again.
It was cold grey and rainy this morning but I still went off to catch the bus to Hull as I had planned. The journey was over an hour and I managed to sit next to a lady who talked to me for the whole trip. or should I say talked at me as I made very little contribution! Took some of the buildings on my way to The Ferens art gallery.
The Turner Prize exhibits are only there until this coming weekend so I was just in time. I have to admit that I really like realism in paintings, so have not been a bit fan of the Turner Prize, but was excited to be able to get to see the exhibits. I will put single pictures from the three runners up, well. one is just a sheet about the artist as her entry was a film of the Gaza Strip, which was quite compelling.
I found some of Lubaina Himid's, the winners display, a little odd, like the wedding scene, but I was intrigued by the paintings on old pieces of crockery, depicting slavery and the nobility's reaction to it's abolition. She also had many articles from the broadsheet papers reflecting on how black people can be represented.
I had a little look around some of the other galleries, photography without flash was allowed which was good. I loved the sculpture of a young Joan of Arc, think it was called 'Goodbye to the flock'.
Had to take one of the famous lions of course.
There was this strange sculpture outside.
I also went into the Maritime Museum to see the 'Turner and the Whale' exhibition. No photography allowed in there. A fairly small exhibition, just four Turner paintings of Whalers but a lot of paintings and exhibits from the same era. Last year I did go and see the poppies in Hull and bought a really great picture of them while I was there. Another one on the 'to be framed' pile.
I went into quite a lot of different stores and got these two storage containers in Smiths. Quite expensive for one but they were on buy one and get one free. I thought twice about it as they are reasonably big and I had to come back on the bus, and it was still raining.
The lady that had been on the bus this morning was on the same bus home, but someone else had taken the seat next to me. When she got off my new friend came across to embellish some of the stuff she was telling me earlier.
Quite weary now, so not going to do a lot, maybe a bit of the jigsaw. Looking forward to the new series of Death in Paradise this evening.
Glad to hear you had a good day, apart from chatty woman. You do attract them!
ReplyDeleteSome nice stuff in the exhibitions, but I have to say that the Turner prize winners never do a lot for me. I can’t see the sense in them most of the time. Some of the 'proper' stuff, like the paintings are lovely though. It always amazes me how much detail they manage to get into them. To me that’s proper art :-)
Like your new storage boxes, but I can imagine dragging them home on the bus was fun. But at least you got to see your new friend again :-)
She mentioned a couple of times that she hadn't got any real friends. I didn't fall for becoming top of the list though! It was a good day, the weather didn't dampen my enjoyment, well, not too much anyway. One of the jobs for the weekend is organise the new boxes and maybe get rid of a couple of smaller ones. Weather permitting, although that doesn't really matter, I will try and get the staging finished. Whether I start the other one is another matter!!
