Boot sale and a day of gardening!

This morning Darren and I went to Skirlington as usual, it was bitterly cold so although there were a lot of stalls we didn’t hang about. I have been thinking of getting an exercise bike, again, as I would like to see if I can strengthen the knee to allow me to ride a bike again safely. I thought no it may be a hope too far but I will give it a go. I have had exercise bikes before and find them exceedingly boring to use, so watch this space! This is quite a substantial one and I did haggle a bit!
After I had warmed up a bit I got changed and went out to work in the garden, firstly getting the digging finished in the bed in front of the summer house. That took about an hour so took this from the steps when I was about to have a drink.
Then I worked steadily on, had the two pampas grasses to put in, got one of the magnolia trees out of it’s pot to go in. Then I had bought some English bluebells and also had lily of the valley and a teasel that needed planting. We had six thyme plants that I put at the back near the paving slabs. Also planted over thirty bulbs,  mainly gladioli. So with plenty of hoeing to loosen up when’re I had been treading it took a fair while, with breaks of course!
Doesn’t look too exciting yet, may have to get a few bedding plants to brighten it up. Sitting in the summer house I saw lots of birds today. goldfinch, chaffinch, robins, the blackbirds and a dunnock. Yesterday I saw a wren. I took some pictures with the phone but not a lot of zoom. I will take my bigger camera out next time I am sitting and watching.

I did plant out a couple of courgette plants in the fruit bush bed and watered some drooping plants in the bed at the bottom of the garden, I was getting tired but I did assemble the tomato greenhouse, a pretty good bargain for the price I paid.
I have three small tomato plants so may get them put in tomorrow.
My legs are rebelling at the moment so not doing much this evening, will watch Line of Duty later.

  1. All the exercise you get in that garden digging and weeding and you buy an exercise bike! No one could accuse you of not trying to stay fit!
It’s a lot of work digging those beds over, but they always look nice when they’re freshly dug or hoed. They look even better when they sprout a bit of colour later on.
Considering you took the bird pics with the phone, they’re not bad at all. It’ll be nice to get in a bit closer with the zoom though. All that freshly turned soil must be like going to an all you can eat buffet for them.

  2. Quite a tiring day, I think the bulb planting finished me off, a lot of stooping!
Will try to get some good bird pictures, just need to be out there when the cats are sleeping!
I will report how the exercise biking progresses or report it will be returning to the boot sale!
