This morning I walked up to the studio so that I arrived at 10 am. It has been a damp cold and miserable day, but I was quite warm by the time I arrived. Donna had one or two things to do and then we rolled out some clay. In the end I was doing the dishes, or trying to, on my own as Donna had paperwork and painting to catch up with. I decided to paint one of the larger oval plates red before going on to the leaves, and then and some of the crusty bits that I collect in the middle to make a funky serving plate for Christmas.
With the clay and the leaves it soon became evident that the clay was too soft, when we check the ones we had seen had been made with air drying clay. But, in best Mastermind tradition I had started so I would finish! Here with the leaves rolled onto the clay.
And here with the leaves removed, which wasn't easy as the clay was bending and the leaves had become damp and fell to pieces!
They are drying now and then they will be biscuit fired and ready for smoothing down and painting.
I made sure the plate was well covered with paint all over and then added more paint in the centre and added the crusty bits, a mixture ot colours so definitely a surprise awaits us after firing.
I walked home and have been moving boxes and making space for more boxes on and off all afternoon. Have a bag ready for the charity shop and will have another one by tomorrow and have also taken quite a lot of rubbish down to the bin, so feeling tired but can see where I have been!
Those leaf dishes look really funky. I hope they dry and fire properly as I’d like to see the finished article. I can see why air drying clay would be a bit easier though. Also like the red plate, it should turn out really bright. And you really need another serving plate for Christmas :-)
ReplyDeleteBet the local charity shops will fair well as you sort out stuff and decide if it goes or stays. As I keep saying, you’ll laugh about all this another day!
Fingers crossed the leaf dishes will dry well enough to be fired, I will wait to try air drying clay until we have moved. Plenty of leaves to choose from there too!! I spend so much time collecting the crusty bits that may as well get to use some of them!!
