Spindles and knives!

This morning I needed to be downstairs as the carpenter was coming to fit the new spindles on the stairs, we had had a rather big gap with two missing for some time. I have shortbread moulds but haven't used them since I came 'up north' due to temperamental gas pressure. I know using a new cooker, or in a new area can be tricky until you have tested a few recipes, but thought it was time to give it a go. It did turn out of the mould okay once it was cool, but wasn't quite right in the centre. Will try again at a slightly lower heat and for a bit longer.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a set of kitchen knives in a little Aladdin's cave of a shop for £6. Hadn't opened it as I needed a knife block. Ordered a plain black upright one which I thinks works well with the colourful knives.

Meanwhile the carpenter was having a real struggle on the stairs, the new spindles had all been cut to the same length but one he needed was shorter! Heard him on the phone trying to explain to his boss who wasn't getting it at all! So, he has replaced two and mended one that was broken, but we do still have a gap, but not such a bit one. Also they are not stained so another job to add to the list!
I caught the bus to Freeport again this afternoon, very quiet there, really is my sort of place, not being a particularly keen shopper in big malls. I need to stop going though as one place has great stuff for the garden. Got a metal planter today that looks like a bag and when I collected it saw some spiders that had just come in, Put them together with the dragonflies from yesterday so just one picture.
The trouble with lots of planters is that you then need lots of plants! At least we got three bags of compost at the garden centre so shouldn't need to get extra for a bit.
The church was looking full of mystery in the mist, it is a great building whatever the weather.
Have set up the printer now and also got another bag of bits for the charity shop. I really do intend to get organised!

  1. The shortbread looks nice, and I’m sure it tastes pretty good too. I like the pattern on them, it must be a good mould. You’re spending more time in the kitchen, which is good, and bettervstill you’re enjoying it. Nice knives and block. No plain black ones for you :-)
I can imagine the carpenters boss being a bit bemused at his description. It’s much easier to see the problem in the pic. I hope he took one to show him.
They have some good stuff at Freeport, the spider is definitely you and needed to be rehomed. The planter is unusual, I’ve never seen one like that before. You’ll be overflowing with flowers and colour before long.

  2. Yes, good and unusual stuff at Freeport, best not be going there too often! They are stone moulds, I do have some that don't go in the oven so you need to turn them out before cooking. I think the recipe would be a little different for them and I will have to look it up. Think I only ever used those once and I don't have instructions.
The lad took pictures, measurements and a spindle back with him to try and explain the problem!
