It has been quite a busy day today, with a bit more walking involved than of late! Tina had a training day near York and said she would drop me off at Monks Cross retail park if I was interested. I could then get a bus into York and make my way home when I was ready. From the main part of Monks Cross it was about a 10 minute walk to The Range, haven't been to one of those for a while. Bought a quilting book and a metre of material. Then I walked back to the retail park and had a look in Hobbycraft. Then I caught a but into York and enjoyed a wander there. First thing I saw as I got off the bus was a tree covered in blossom!
As I walked through the city I saw a sign to Holy Trinity church, built in the twelfth century, and open to visitors.
It was fabulous inside and had box pews, which I had never seen before, or even heard of!
A slightly better idea of the box pews.
A nice shot of the minster as I passed.
Walking to the train station I had to go over the bridge so got a look at the river.
This unusual sign was as I neared the train station.
I caught the train back to Scarborough and walked through the town to get to the ceramic studio to collect the glazed train money box. I am pleased with it.
I took this photo soon after I got home because I have never noticed the sun catch the aerial over the way so that it looks like a lit window on the chimney!
A nice day, and some very nice pictures. From the skies, it looks like you had some good weather, which is always a bonus. I've never seen box pews either, but have to say I really like them. I wonder if they're particular to that church, as I'd have thought I'd have come across them some time. I've spent a bit of time in churches, only taking photos though.
ReplyDeleteYou should be pleased with the train, I think it's lovely, and I know some other people who will too.
Not seen an aerial picture for a while :-)
The chap in the church said that the box pews were designed so that complete families sat in them and faced each other, but the Victorians didn't like that layout so most were ripped out to have churches as they are laid out now. So don't think there are too many churches left like this one. It was very interesting. The weather stayed pretty good most of the day.
DeleteWell I never. You learn something new every day. I actually like the idea of the families sitting together facing each other.
