Plant Power Day

For once a UK special day, the first one was in 2018, the aim to get everyone to put plant based food and drink first in their eating and drinking habits. Not sure how well that is doing, but it is early days!

Today I decided to tackle the area where the two raised beds are. Didn’t plant anything in them last year and that area is the most weed concentrated in the garden. A lot of ground elder and the ones with very long tap roots plus of course the added difficulty of tree roots! I moved the wooden frames so the I could dig properly underneath them. The weeds are only just breaking the surface so it doesn’t look that bad, looks can be deceiving!

The next picture is where I had got to after about an hour and the one after that the amount of roots I had removed!

After a break in the summer house with a nice coffee I carried on, so a picture of where I am now and the next impressive pile of roots!

It will need to be dug again as I am sure to have missed plenty! The digging wasn’t too bad but lifting the fork when it was fighting with the roots has ended up with my thumb joints and wrists being very sore, hopefully they will settle before too long! When I was taking cart loads of rubbish up to the garden bin I spotted this white crocus amongst the snowdrops, very pretty.

I wrote a couple of letters before getting dinner and have finished off another Easter card this evening. Very weary now so going ai will stay awake for the two programs I want to watch tonight!

Ooh! Dentist’s Day!

Mmm, suppose they need a day, no one really likes visiting them but not many want the job either!

Another short post today as I have spent time in the garden again and a bit of crafting this afternoon. 

I went back to the same area on the garden a finished the bit to the left of the steps and cleared between the steps as best I could.

That’s a big area worked on in total, there will still be unwanted weeds popping up, but if I get into the habit of hoeing regularly maybe I can keep it looking half decent.

This afternoon I have been deciding how to use the stamps I have already coloured, three cards made now except for a greeting inside.

I imagine I will feel like doing something else in the garden tomorrow.

International Day of Energy Efficiency

I suppose this is a day we should all be taking seriously, better put an extra jumper on!

Today not a lot of pictures, I spent some of the morning doing household chores then have had a couple of spells up on the garden again. Still near the apple tree but the piece in front of the summer house.

It is a bigger area than it appears and a lot of digging involved although the earth wasn’t too hard to turn, the roots of the tree made it a little more difficult!

So not a lot to show for the day, I have coloured one of the Easter stamps and stamped a new one a couple of times. It is small but really cute!

Making the most of an essential journey!

Tina had her car booked in for service and the garage is in Scarborough. They had arranged a curtesy car so that she didn’t have to wait around at the garage for a couple of hours. I got a flask and snack ready and we set off late morning as the appointment was for 12.30pm. A very nice hybrid car was at her disposal. Firstly we went to the mere, the cafe was doing take away food so we had a sausage sandwich before feeding the birds. I had bagged up a large amount of the duck and swan food and the birds were absolutely ravenous! We had a short walk along the side of the mere and had an following of water fowl all the way along! Quite a few pics, no explanations needed. Tina didn’t have the phone handy when I was wrestling my finger out of a swans beak!

After that we drove to the Scarborough bays, driving round the South Bay before parking by the north bay. Scarborough seemed to be taking the pandemic much more seriously that Hornsea. Plenty of police presence and about four places open along the touristy South Bay and nothing at all open by the north bay. I had taken the flask so we did have a cup of tea.

We had a walk along the front, very bracing but also very enjoyable. Then Tina got the call to say the car was ready so we headed back to the garage. As we were in Scarborough we called in at the Lidl before coming home.

The jigsaw was almost finished but we left the roof of the house for Darren to completely finish it when he got home.it has been a real stinker with very peculiar shaped pieces, but a lovely picture.

Two celebratory days today. National Grammar Day and National Dance the Waltz Day.

A walk along Bridlington sea front.

It was good that the weather wasn’t too special today, it has been really quite cold. I don’t usually relish it getting colder but Tina had an appointment in Bridlington and if the weather had been better I probably wouldn’t have gone along as people seem to think the Covid restrictions don’t apply at the seaside! We parked at the harbour car park, Tina headed into the town and I set off along the promenade. There was an interesting display by the car park, two photos of that, the later one was from higher up. It wasn’t busy along the front and the promenade is very wide so no need to get close to anyone.

You can see from the empty car park it wasn’t overly busy. Tina said it was pretty busy in the town so I picked the right direction for my walk.

This afternoon I have done quite a bit of the jigsaw and then took the card I had made to Sarah and David. Sarah put a couple of chairs outside and we had a socially distanced, masked chat for a few minutes! She seemed very happy with the card which is good.

Years ago I started reading a book called A Cure For Serpents, the book has long gone but I have never forgotten the title.Managed to get hold of a copy which arrived today. I will read it after I finish my latest Marple novel.

Revisiting The Knife Angel (not literally)

Two years ago The Knife Angel came to Hull. I was so impressed by it so another glimpse can’t be a bad thing, for me anyway!

This morning I left home just after eight to go and get a package sent off. I had sent the same one last Monday and it arrived back yesterday with an incomplete address! It was the new address my friend had given me but I texted her and had the extra detail to resend it! The post office shop used to do long hours and had the till for the post office open outside usual hours. But now they don’t open until nine because of the restrictions so ai was there way too early. Went up to the sea front, had a drink and a wander around until opening time. Some sea pictures and some of painted pebbles, which are all the rage in Hornsea. It was a grey cold morning and I went early purposely to avoid the crowds!

I did go in the garden for a while this morning, I had bought some plants when ai was out and wanted to get the edges done and some more planting.

The next job will be the other side of the tree in front of the summer house.

This afternoon and part of the evening I have been working on the commission card!

Isabel was one of the founder members of the Hornsea Bowling Club!

Two celebratory days on the calendar today, Dr Seuss Day and National Banana Cream Pie Day.

Tina has to go to a meeting in Bridlington tomorrow, if the weather is miserable I will go along for the ride. If it is nice I will give it a miss as the seaside is a magnet for the ‘what pandemic folk’!

Whupitty Scoorie Day

What a great sounding day, think we should adopt it. It has been celebrated since the early 19th century by people in Lanark, Scotland to celebrate the approach of Spring.

I have been feeling a bit spring like today and have spent a good deal of the day getting the bed I was working on ready for spring! A lot of digging and plenty of bulbs and roots removed. I worked in three stages taking breaks between so as not to over challenge the knees! I dug up the smaller flowering plants and replanted them later so that I could dig properly where they were.

Pandora jumped up on the tree stump, the cats had been chasing each other a Lund but this time she was getting away from Blue!

When I went out to put some food waste into the garden bin I spotted this tulip which has amazingly opened before we have any daffodils out!

I have made a start on the card for a ninety five year old, drew and cut out the numbers. Will probably decorate them tomorrow.

Did do some of the jigsaw when I was having breaks from the gardening. Darren did a bit when he got home and Tina did join me for a while as well.
