I slept fairly well, heard one plane go over at about 11.15 pm and if there were any more I didn't hear them! Breakfast was good, plenty of choice to set us up for the day. The new driver, another local man and very nice, collected us at 9.30 am Much chillier today but bright and sunny as we set out. Lovely journey, about 40 minutes and we passed the Angel of the North again. The coaches are not allowed up in the city centre so he dropped us off at the coach park, but there was a shuttle bus up to the cathedral.

No photos allowed in the cathedral, I didn't bring any sketching materials with me but went into the library shop and bought a Liberty note book (very posh and about the size of  standard photo) and had a pen I was writing postcards with. So sat and did a sketch of an unusual pillar!
Took a couple of views through the cloister arches.

The castle is near the cathedral.
This house looked gorgeous with the virginia creeper.
This display was in the cathedral grounds.
I actually used this quaint post box.
I caught the shuttle bus down to the market square, this statue and church were in the square.

I wandered down to take a look at the river.
I caught the shuttle bus back to the coach park. Will end with a couple of 'arty' shots, funky reflections and a halo'd sun!

Have had quite a bit of pain in both ankle and knee today so am resting up for the trip to Holy Island tomorrow. Had a lovely dinner again tonight.

  1. Looks like you managed to fit quite a bit in today. Shame you had the pain to spoil it though. This particular short break seems quite a nice one, and the Holy Island trip should be good. Shame the original trip you booked was cancelled, but think you fell in well with this one. You also have the bonus of being able to book the other one again sometime :-) You'll be busy looking through all the different breaks as soon as you get home, I bet!
Funnily enough I was reading something the other day about postboxes of that shape. I think they were the original version, and there's not that many of them left nowadays. So definitely lucky for you to be able to use one.
The first and last pics are my favourites this evening. Love the moody sky in particular. Hopefully you'll do a few more sketches now you have the pad, they'll be good for your scrapbook.

    1. I will certainly be thinking about these trips again. All the people I have spoken to had been regulars. I do think this is an interesting one, and the hotel is fine. Was looking at scrapbooks today.
