Bonsai woes!

Very twee celebratory days today. National Puppy Day and Cuddly Kitten Day! Not a lot to add, they are very sweet when they are in a picture or belong to somebody else!

Tina had a large letter that was quite heavy to be posted so I took a walk to the he post office, not such a bright morning so I wen on up to see the sea afterwards and it was relatively quiet. It was soon after nine which helped. The clouds and sun made for a couple of nice photos this morning.

I went out into the gardens with the idea of getting the eighteen plants in that have been waiting for a while. Some in the front garden nd some in the back. I didn’t take pictures but ended up hoeing the large beds in the front and the back as the weeds are beginning to show, so had quite a long session in the end.

After lunch I thought it was time to get the bonsai trees repotted. I have some new bonsai pots and got them ready in an attempt to be more organised.

The bags of bonsai compost are small and I have a lot of trees! I managed to get five done before the compost ran out. The first time I attacked the tree roots I thought I would kill them, but have learnt that it is good for them and helps to keep them small but it is a pretty messy job de soiling all the roots!

I have ordered a reasonable quantity of bonsai compost hoping that it will be sufficient for the rest. Doing just five took getting on for a couple of hours!

I cleared everything away then came into the warm and did a crossword puzzle!

Tina had a few primulas over from the Mothering Sunday service so have a few more to put in tomorrow. She also ordered some different, sweeter rhubarb plants which arrived today, a gardeners work is never done!

Holby tonight and Doctor Death is about to get his comeuppance!

National Goof Off Day

A day to be silly and leave the work until tomorrow, sounds like one to remember!

I went out fairly early to post some letters and then again a bit later to collect my prescription and look for a birthday present for a friend in the paper shop. They do have a lot of jewellery and ornaments in there,

Then I planned to get some weeding done in the walled garden, one reason being that it looked a mess and the second being that when the weeds get big frogs sometimes shelter under them and I would be beside myself and not garden again if I damaged a frog!

In the end I spent most of the day on and off tidying the area up as well as the weeding. I had a very small cutting off one of the yuccas a couple of years back and it has grown really well, so I have now planted it out in the bed where the fruit bushes are.

Paul, the handyman who has done a couple of jobs for us came to tidy the laurels in the parish hall grounds and then to put up my butterfly mosaic picture. He had got battens and brackets as he was worried about the weight. It is now looking good in the summer house.

I did pop out to the shops again this afternoon, got a few plants in Countdown to go in a couple of planters in the walled garden and then along to Boyes to get some yellow ribbon for Tina. Got the plants in and then finished tidying for today and packing everything away,

I helped Tina with yellow bows and helped her decorate the cross in the front garden ready for the Day of Remembrance tomorrow, a year on from the Covid outbreak and lockdown.

I had thought ai would make a start on repotting the bonsai trees today, so maybe tomorrow!

Spring Fairy Fun Day!

Just today’s title makes me smile!

This morning Darren took me for a drive up to Mappleton and was then going to fill the car up at the garage on the way back. It was a lovely morning and we hoped going pretty early would mean we could get into the car park. There were a few spaces left, which was good. The cafe was open for take away food so we had a sausage sandwich and a cuppa, almost like old times! We walked down the slope to see the sea a bit better, quite a few people around but plenty of space and fresh air. A selection of photos.

After lunch I spent an hour or so in the front garden, working along the last part of the right hand side bed. Did some pruning again and dug out one plant that we hadn’t cared for last year and it got really big!

While I was getting dinner and just after I took a few photos of the changing sky!

I had some new bonsai stuff arrive today, now is the time for repotting them, not a favourite job! Also, it it is not so bright tomorrow I have p pants to get into the garden,

World Storytelling Day

Now that’s a lovely celebratory day, listening to a good story teller is a real pleasure.

I did the usual shopping and letter posting this morning and started working in the front garden so that I could watch out for the grocery delivery. I hadn’t intended to do a lot but one I was started I continued after the delivery.I had just been gong to cut back plants but ended up hoeing as well, not a brilliant job, but every little helps! Lots of stuff for Tina to burn now as the dead plants were dry.

The h as been a tree in the garden that has been dying off, I removed the dead areas last year, but the rest is on the way out now, so I cut it down and tidied that bit of ground.

Then it was ‘just a bit more’ as there were more plants needing pruning a bit further along!

These tulips in the large bed are quite stunning.

I did do a bit more in the garden, we had bought compost for the raised planters on Thursday and I got a bag on compost into each one. We have two more bags, but will do that another day as I was feeling that was enough for today. So I went and made a drink and sat in the summer house for a little while. No wild life, just two cars eyeing the birds!!

As there wasn’t a lot on tv tonight Tina suggested a walk by the sea. Daren joined us which was nice. I didn’t go quite as far as them, tried to take some pics while they walked a further. I had had a fair bit of exercise today!

Red Nose Day, dig deep!

Getting ready for a fun evening viewing and trying not to donate too often!

I did go for a short walk this morning, the legs were a bit sore but got to keep trying. Did some household chores, including a thorough go at the stairs. The cats spend a lot of time sleeping on them so they get pretty hairy!

This afternoon I helped Tina fold her monthly letters up and then filled envelopes with the letters and other bits relating to Easter. 

I went for another walk to deliver a couple of the letters which were off the Atwick Road. I went by the very quiet sports field.

Can’t zoom very much with the phone but had to take this of the bird on the blossom covered tree!

I wanted to take a selfie sitting on the stone bench but couldn’t fit it in, so next best is one fo the bench and one of me sitting on it! (You’ll have to take my word for it!)

The roundabout in town is looking good.

Awkward Moments Day!

Quite an appropriate special day today, I will explain. We set off about 10am to go to the auction house in Scarborough as Tina had bid on a chest of drawers last week and won the item. We were off to collect it. Quite a good journey there and we had a flask etc with us as we intended to see the sea, go to the mere and then the garden centre while we were there. I got the back seats put down and then waited for Tina when she went into the reception area. When she came out she said there was a bit of a problem, it was bigger than she thought and wouldn’t go in the car, hence the awkward moment! They would have charged more that the item cost to deliver it so in the end Tina decided that it can go back into the auction next time. It was a bit bigger than she had anticipated anyway. Hopefully she won’t lose too much money when it is re-sold.

From there we went down to the sea front, we had a reasonable walk along the front past the beach huts as there had been a sign to say the cafe at the far end was open for take aways. Sadly today it wasn’t as it was a dull day. Took some photos from that end before walking back and going to the one place that was serving take away food.

Near the cafe was a statue that used to be in the town centre near the Brunswick centre. Nice to see her near the sea now.

We called into Sainsbury’s on the way to the mere, we didn’t go too mad. We just fed the birds at the mere today, we had taken a good supply of pellets with us and they were very hungry birds! I managed to feed the brave swan without getting my fingers in the beak today!

We hadn’t used the flask so Tina parked up near Cayton Bay for us to have a cuppa and see the sea from there.

I took a closer picture of that cliff as Darren and Tina have heard me go on about the pointy things in the distance every time we take that route! Tina looked it up and you can’t drive anywhere near but you can walk to them on the Cleveland Way, so the plan is to actually do that one of these days. Tina will come with me and not just drop me off as she said she is not leaving me on a cliff top on my own!

We then called in at Dean’s garden centre and got some compost for the raised beds and a few other bits then made out way home.

Turned out a very pleasant day after the initial disappointment.
