Bit of variety

I went to the post box early and then started the latest jigsaw while I waited for Shane, the Ringtons man to arrive.
I was surprised how many edge pieces I missed, thought I had been so thorough! The sad news was that Shane is leaving and we won’t be seeing him again. It will seem strange having a new caller.
When he left I went into the greenhouse for a while as I needed to do some potting on. I had already started with the hollyhocks when I took the photo.
I collected the seeds from the black hollyhock last year, just as well as the original plant has died.
I finished two trays of plants, some straw flowers as well as the hollyhocks, and put them in the cold frame. I can’t leave them outside the greenhouse to harden off as they get dug out by some creatures.
A couple of trays of seedlings I put directly into the ground, if they survive it will be the survival of the fittest! I put them in the bed with the heucheras I am trying to revive.
Just before one I went round to the wine bar! Sher had planned a terrarium workshop there with fizz included but there had been no interest,, so she asked a couple of us to go along and make a small closed terrarium and she took lots of photos to advertise it again. I had a cup of tea!
Tools at the ready!
Quite nice jars that she provided.
Didn’t keep the top on at first as it was misting up while the water was being absorbed.
I went out and watered the gardens earlier as it wasn’t sunny today.
I try to look after Darren and Tina’s miniature trees (bigger than the bonsais), I repotted them last year but by then two had died. I still keep watering them just in case! Anyway, they had become very weedy so I tidied them up a bit. It doesn’t help that behind the stone bench there are nettles and sycamore trees behind it and the bench doesn’t move si clearing behind is a challenge! But as least you can see the trees in the second picture.
A picture of the terrarium closed to finish this evening.

  1. You’ve been quite busy really. Little bit of this, little bit of that.
You did miss a lot of edge pieces this time. Second time around will be a doozy 🙂
The plants from seeds look very strong and healthy. It’s good you can collect them and start again the following year. A bit cheaper too!
I would have gone to her terrarium class. I look at them every time I go into Blue Diamond on a Wednesday. They have some about that size for about £15 ish, and some big ones for £50-60. I keep dithering over whether to buy a small one first to see if it survives before I buy a big one. I like the closed ones as they seem a bit easier to look after. The one you made looks lovely.
You’ve got a lot of bonsai and miniature trees between you all. Good job one of you looks after them 😂
Sorry to hear your Ringtons man is going. Hopefully his replacement will be as nice and as helpful.

  2. I did a bit more to the jigsaw and found three more edge pieces!
The prices at Blue Diamond sound pretty good for terrariums. The closed ones don’t need watering, you just have to take the lid off for a while when the condensation builds up.
Really pleased with the hollyhock plants, they won’t flower this year but should ne good healthy plants to put in the garden for next year.
No real gardening tomorrow as it is catch up day, best get out there at the weekend.

  4. As long as you enjoy doing them it doesn’t matter how long it takes.
